The 2016 Freewheeler carried the same fixed-fairing trike format into its second year, still running the non-touch Boom! Box 4.3. It's a dependable AM/FM and weather-band setup, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were never part of it. HogPlay wires this trike for both, wirelessly, without disturbing the factory dash.
No Factory CarPlay — GTS Swap or Aftermarket
The 2016 Harley-Davidson Freewheeler ran the factory Boom! Box 4.3 — no factory CarPlay or Android Auto. Two ways to add it: swap to a 2019–2023 Boom! Box GTS and add a HogPlay GTS Bypass for wireless CarPlay, or fit an aftermarket CarPlay radio (SoundStream, Rockford Fosgate, Boss, Diamond Audio, Aquatic AV). By its second model year the Freewheeler had settled into its identity: a fixed-fairing, two-wheel-rear trike built for long, stable rides with a full dash and trunk front and back. The 2016 Boom! Box 4.3 still handled the basics - radio, weather band, a basic aux input - but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were nowhere in its firmware.
Most 2016 Freewheeler owners chasing CarPlay go one of two ways. The first is a direct aftermarket swap - Boss and Diamond Audio both make CarPlay-ready head units sized for this dash, and most arrive with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in already, no headset bypass required since that step only applies to keeping the factory radio. The second is retiring the 4.3 altogether for a 2019-2023 Boom! Box GTS, then adding a HogPlay CarPlay bypass adaptor to switch on the GTS's own CarPlay and USB port - Android Auto still needs to come from elsewhere on that path.
