About Rockford Fosgate
Rockford Fosgate traces back to 1973, when Jim Fosgate — working out of his garage in Arizona — found that the human ear processes sound differently than music itself. His answer was a circuit he called the Frequency Energizer, which later became the patented Punch EQ. He demonstrated it that same year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago, built into the first Fosgate consumer product, the PR-7000 amplifier.
In 1980 Jim Fosgate handed the keys over to Camelback Investors, who established Rockford Corporation; Fosgate himself moved on to home theatre work. The name comes from the founder's surname and the company's address on Rockford Drive in Tempe, Arizona — where the company is still based, and where its amps, subwoofers, speakers, processors and source units are still designed and engineered. The milestones since have stayed close to that lineage: Boosted Rail amplifiers in 2011, the 3Sixty.3 processor in 2013, the T1 slim-fit woofer in 2015, the T3 19-inch subwoofer in 2016.
The motorcycle side of the business is built around Harley-Davidson — Rockford Fosgate describes the range as purpose built for it. They make amplifiers, speakers, source units and accessories for bikes, and are known for plug-and-play systems that use matched components for consistent results. The stated engineering goal is audio that still works at highway speeds, with Element Ready protection against UV exposure. The PMX-HD14 is the head unit at the centre of that range.
