Two upgrade paths solve it. Install an aftermarket touchscreen radio from a maker like Aquatic AV or SoundStream - most of these come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in from the factory, and this route needs no headset bypass at all. Or hold onto the stock look and swap in a 2019-2023 GTS unit, then add a HogPlay CarPlay bypass adaptor to unlock the GTS's factory CarPlay and USB port (Android Auto still needs to come from elsewhere).
