The 2017 Road Glide Special was the first with Harley's Milwaukee-Eight V-twin, pairing that added torque with the familiar Boom! Box 6.5 GT touchscreen up front. The 6.5 GT still handled GPS and Bluetooth calling well for 2017, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were never part of the factory package. HogPlay adds both wirelessly, letting this bike's new engine and its dash finally match modern phones.
No Factory CarPlay — GTS Swap or Aftermarket
The 2017 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special ran the factory Boom! Box 6.5 GT — no factory CarPlay or Android Auto. Two ways to add it: swap to a 2019–2023 Boom! Box GTS and add a HogPlay GTS Bypass for wireless CarPlay, or fit an aftermarket CarPlay radio (SoundStream, Rockford Fosgate, Boss, Diamond Audio, Aquatic AV). Either way a HogPlay Media Box adds Netflix, YouTube and streaming and a Piglet adds Mirror Link and AirPlay. No headset bypass required.

The 2017 Road Glide Special was the first model year to run Harley's Milwaukee-Eight engine, bolted into the same shark-nose chassis with the Boom! Box 6.5 GT touchscreen up front. That radio still delivered solid GPS and phone-call performance for the time, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were never on the factory options list - the 6.5 GT's touchscreen doesn't run either one.
Most riders solve this by swapping in an aftermarket CarPlay radio - SoundStream and Rockford Fosgate both make head units built for this dash - which typically brings wireless CarPlay and Android Auto together with no headset bypass needed, since that step only matters on the factory radio. The alternative is stepping up to a 2019-2023 GTS unit and running a HogPlay CarPlay bypass adaptor to open up the GTS's own factory CarPlay and USB port.
Whichever radio ends up in the dash, a HogPlay Media Box adds Android Auto plus Netflix, YouTube, YouTube Music, and podcasts from an SD card or USB drive, a HogPlay USB Piglet is the smaller way to get Android Auto with Mirror Link or AirPlay mirroring, and a HogPlay Media Screen gives you a second, bar-mounted display if you want one.
