The 2022 Road King Special doesn't change the formula that made the 2021 update the last big shift for the FLHRXS: it carries over the same Milwaukee-Eight 114 and the same no-fairing, no-radio layout the model has run since Harley dropped a factory head unit from this trim. New for the year are colors like Midnight Crimson and Apex Black alongside the standard Black, but nothing about the electronics changes — there's still no factory screen, no factory speakers, and nothing to bypass. HogPlay's fix stays consistent too: an add-on 7-inch screen, with its own built-in speakers, bringing wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and streaming apps to a bike that ships with none of it.
No Factory Radio — Add Your Own Screen
The 2022 Harley-Davidson Road King Special left the factory with no radio, stereo or touchscreen to bypass — so instead of a workaround, you add your own. A standalone HogPlay Media Screen is a 7-inch head unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, live Maps & Waze navigation, calls and streaming built in — we recommend the Screen 7 Pro with its onboard DVR drive-cam. Most riders settle for Bluetooth-only kits that leave the phone in your pocket with no turn-by-turn directions; this puts it all on the bars instead. It mounts to the handlebars with basic power and ground and comes off just as easily, so reach out to the HogPlay team if you'd like a hand. (Media Box support on Screens is in development.)

With the Milwaukee-Eight 114 (1,868cc) now a year into service, the 2022 Road King Special is a carryover in nearly every sense — same nacelle headlamp, same quick-detach windshield, same absence of any fairing to house a radio. Harley offered it in Midnight Crimson and Apex Black in addition to solid Black, but the electronics story is unchanged: no factory screen, no factory speakers, nothing on the bike for a bypass kit to unlock.
HogPlay treats every model year of this bike the same way: a self-contained 7-inch CarPlay screen, complete with its own speakers, mounted at the handlebars. It runs wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and streaming apps independent of the factory wiring, plug-and-play and fully reversible, no dealer visit required.
The HogPlay Media Screen on the 2022 Harley-Davidson Road King Special runs a dual-Bluetooth design — pair your phone for wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on one channel while the other feeds an auxiliary amplifier, handlebar speakers or a portable Bluetooth speaker. A small built-in speaker handles turn-by-turn voice prompts and light audio on the move, and the fully sealed, waterproof housing is built rugged to stand up to the weather and the elements the 2022 Harley-Davidson Road King Special rides in.
