The last Harley model year of the millennium didn't ship with anything resembling modern infotainment. A 1999 Harley-Davidson touring bike ran a basic AM/FM head unit, and Softail, Dyna, and Sportster models had no factory stereo at all — a gap that only aftermarket hardware closes today.

Twin Cam power was new for 1999, but the electronics around it weren't: touring models kept the same analog AM/FM radio Harley had used for years, with no thought given to digital audio, let alone a phone. Every non-touring model in the lineup — Softail, Dyna, Sportster — left the factory with an empty dash where a radio might have gone.

That split still defines the upgrade path. Touring owners drop in an aftermarket CarPlay radio to replace the old tuner, while the rest of the 1999 Harley-Davidson range is better matched to a bar-mounted Media Screen that needs no existing radio bay to install. Wiring stays hidden behind the fairing or under the tank either way, keeping the factory dash looking stock from the saddle.
